Move your ass, Sarah!

I can hear his footsteps, pounding against the damp road just metres behind me. I can hear his groans of hunger, of aggression, as he gains momentum.

But worst of all—I can smell him from here.

I want to rest, take five, give my aching muscles a moment. Maybe I’ll be able to stop and hide somewhere soon. I’m sure I’ll find a safe place eventually. This country road must go somewhere.

No, I can’t. It’s not safe. He’ll catch me. I’ll be a sitting duck. I can’t risk it. It’s better to keep moving. I’m faster than him. It’s only been about four miles. I can do another ten, easy. And it’s not like it’s my first time running this sort of distance. As long as my grinding left knee holds, and my lungs don’t burn out, I can outrun him. I’m better than he is. Stronger. More focused.

And for one thing…I’m not dead.
